Just ordered me some Ultra Sculpey Light!
Previously, I've always used Fimo Soft and Sculpey III.
Out of the two, Fimo is best as its more durable than Sculpey, but it depends on what I use them for.
Fimo is usually used as my base of my sculptures, the main and largest body of the work, while Sculpey becomes the filler, such as the little strawberry toppings or mixing it with TLS.
But, I've been hearing good things from Ultra Light and thought I'd give it ago.
Also, for those who's been wondering what glaze I use, since I think that Studio by Sculpey Gloss is
shiet! Studio Sculpey just dies off and peels after a few months. So what I use is... Circuit Board Lacquer.
'What? Are you serious? What gave you that idea that circuit board lacquer would work?' Totally by coincidence. My b/f works around circuit boards and so happened to dunk one of my charms into their lacquer and viola! Substitute gloss! Servisol Protective Circuit Board Lacquer found in Australia at any Jaycar stores. In spray can form. Its glossy and a great protecting gloss and doesnt peel off nor does it have that horrible gooey effect after a while. And although after a while it does loose its shine, but its still on the charm, protecting it. Plus, it also works on acrylic paints.
Plus a tip I found, using Silicone Sealant (like the ones Plumbers use) instead of TLS for that whipped cream effect. It cant be baked, so the polymer clay items needs to be pre baked and then you place the silicon around/over/in/on the polymer and let it dry for a couple of days. Neat huh? Dont have to go through all that hard work of creating it with TLS.
<3 Stay tuned to see how the Ultra Light comes out.
-Edit
Okay, so I just received my Ultra Light Sculpey and well.... it's okay, I guess.
It's not as hard after curing as some other reviews have said and it feels soft even after its been baked. But, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I baked a 1cm diameter ball of Ultra Light and a thin flat one of about 3mm.
The flat piece retained a flexible finish and I tried to bend it in half, it only broke in two after the fourth time I bent it, so I'll give it some credit for that. It's durable enough for small flat pieces, larger than 2inches flat might not hold so good.
The ball that I baked also felt, soft-ish, but it was hardened enough that when I tried to crease it with my nail, it didn't dent.
Ultra Sculpey Light doesn't cure as hard as Sculpey III. Feels about the same consistency as Sculpey SuperFlex after baking. But, I wasn't expecting anything amazing from clay that's so light that it can float on water after baking.
Prior to baking, the clay's texture reminded of me soft nougat. It had that creamy, yet very-very slight grainy feel to it... kinda like marshmallow in a way. It was pretty cool. Kinda felt like I wanted to eat it.
Acrylic paints went on beautifully and doesn't scrape off.
So, Sculpey Ultra Light is a winner in my book... but it totally depends on what you're using it for to make it with. Over all, nothing beats Fimo.
